Is There a ShareX for Mac?
The short answer
No. ShareX is Windows-only and there is no macOS build. If you have moved to a Mac, or you run both, PrintScreen.ly is the closest equivalent: capture, a real markup editor, and on-device text grab, running natively on Mac, Windows and Linux with one synced library across them.
What PrintScreen.ly gives you on Mac
- +A real native Mac app, not a virtual machine or a Wine wrapper.
- +An 8-tool markup editor: pen, arrow, shapes, highlighter, text, blur and redact, crop, and unlimited undo.
- +On-device text grab, so you can pull text straight out of a screenshot without uploading it.
- +One private synced library and cross-device clipboard, so a capture on your Mac is already on your Windows machine.
What ShareX genuinely does well
- ·ShareX is free and open source, with no purchase and no account.
- ·It is the most configurable capture tool on Windows: custom upload destinations, workflows, and after-capture task chains that nothing else matches.
- ·Active development and a large community of user-built workflows.
| On Mac | PrintScreen.ly | ShareX |
|---|---|---|
| Native Mac app | Yes | No, Windows only |
| Markup editor | 8 tools, fixed palette, unlimited undo | Built-in image editor on Windows |
| Custom upload destinations | No | Extensive, its signature strength |
| Synced library across machines | Private account library | No first-party sync |
When you should stay put
If you are staying on Windows, stay on ShareX. It is free, it is open source, and it is more configurable than PrintScreen.ly is or intends to be. This page exists for the person who now has a Mac in the mix and needs something that actually runs there.
Common questions
Does ShareX work on Mac?
No. ShareX is a Windows application and the project does not ship a macOS build.
Can I run ShareX on a Mac in a virtual machine?
You can run it inside a Windows VM or on Parallels, and some people do. It works, but you lose native hotkeys, the capture targets the VM's screen rather than macOS, and it is a lot of overhead for a screenshot tool.
Does PrintScreen.ly have ShareX's custom upload destinations?
No, and it is the clearest thing ShareX does better. PrintScreen.ly uploads to your own private library rather than to arbitrary configurable endpoints. If custom destinations are why you use ShareX, PrintScreen.ly will not replace that.
