Many good markdown editors are Apple-only (you will hit this with several popular writing apps), and some that do cross platforms charge per platform. Markd.ly is a single one-time payment of $19.99, and it covers Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android. Buy on a Mac and you have it on your Windows PC too, and the other way round: you sign in with the same Bravely Account on each. No second purchase, no subscription.
The Mac and Windows apps are each built for their own system (SwiftUI on Mac, WPF on Windows) and carry the same toolset: plain .md files on disk, live preview with Mermaid diagrams and KaTeX math, export to HTML, PDF, Word (DOCX), EPUB, LaTeX and reveal.js slides, vim mode, snippets, custom CSS with three built-in themes, search across a folder, AES-256-GCM encrypted documents, and the cloud library.
The differences are small and specific. The Windows app also has a command-line converter (--render) that the Mac app does not. The Mac app can keep an encrypted document's passphrase in your Keychain.
No automatic folder sync
Running on both does not mean your folders stay in sync between them. The cloud library carries a document from one machine to the other when you add it, one document at a time. For whole folders, moving files is your job: a folder you control, version control, whatever you choose.
A sign-in and a regular check-in
You sign in with a Bravely Account on each machine. Markd.ly then works offline, and checks your purchase online at least once every 72 hours.
Word, EPUB, LaTeX and slides go through our service
On both Mac and Windows those exports send the document's text to our conversion service, which converts it and keeps nothing, so they need a connection. HTML and PDF export run on your machine.
Phones are covered, with fewer tools
The iPhone, iPad and Android apps come with the same purchase and open documents from your cloud library. They are for writing and reading; vim mode, encryption and the export formats stay on the desktop.
